Citadel of Qaitbay:

The Citadel of Qaitbay or the Fort of Qaitbay in Alexandria, is one of the most important and huge defensive strongholds along the Mediterranean Sea coast.

This Fort played an important role of the fortification system in the 15th century of Alexandria.
The Fort of Qaitbey is one of the most visible and famous landmarks in Alexandria.

located at the spot of the stunning lighthouse of Pharos.
The fort oversees the entrance to the Eastern Harbour, and directly looks at the sea.

 

However it becomes a dramatic place during the winter as it throws huge waves on to the city!
it has taken too much to appear as amazing and military as a fort should be.

Mohammad Ali modernized the fort which was then a 350 year old fort, built around 1480.
The site was as mentioned before, the place where the famous lighthouse of Pharos was located.

It was considered one of the amazing seven wonders of the ancient world.

There are some evidences that say that its square base once contained a staggering 300 rooms. The fort of qaitbay was built in the second half of the 3rd century BCE.
